Video Footage Used in First War Crimes Trial
The trial of Congolese warlord Thomas Lubanga Dyilo at the International Criminal Court (ICC) is a the first war crimes trial in the ICCs history. Video footage from Video for Change aided in bringing the warlord to justice for his use of child soldiers. It is the first time that video has played an integral role in the campaign to put the issue of child soldiers onto the ICC's agenda, and in helping to bring charges against a warlord for enlisting and conscripting children under the age of fifteen and using them to participate actively in hostilities during the civil war in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The widespread recruitment and use of child soldiers in the DRC is without parallel in Africa. Tens of thousands of child soldiers have been recruited as combatants by all parties to the conflict, which has claimed over 5 million lives.Website: Video for Change: Bringing a Warlord to Justice
